Before a Kitchen Repaint, Decide Who Moves the Appliances
A kitchen wall may continue behind appliances that are not part of the painting scope. Before the appointment, decide whether those areas are included and who handles any movement or disconnection. A painter’s access request should not become an informal instruction to disturb utilities.
Identify what is actually included
Show the visible wall and note areas concealed by appliances. Ask whether the desired finish includes those concealed surfaces or only ordinarily visible ones. Distinguish freestanding items from equipment with water, gas, electrical or other connections. Do not move an appliance simply to provide a photograph when its condition or connections are uncertain.
Assign the specialist work
If the project needs disconnection, movement or reconnection, identify the appropriate provider and approval sequence. Clarify who protects flooring and adjacent finishes during that work. Painting access and utility readiness are different decisions. A quote should state the dependency rather than assuming the homeowner or another trade will take care of it without coordination.
Plan the household interruption
Ask when the appliance will be unavailable, where ordinary food preparation can occur and how the area is released for normal use. Product instructions and the actual work conditions govern the finish schedule; a low-odor description does not settle occupancy or readiness. Keep the appliance and paint handoffs distinct so a completed wall is not mistaken for confirmation that equipment has been correctly reconnected.
Copyable worksheet
Use one row for each field. Mark unknown information clearly and retain the original records.
| Field | Your note |
|---|---|
| Concealed wall areas included | ____________________ |
| Appliance and connection type | ____________________ |
| Movement or reconnection provider | ____________________ |
| Protection and household plan | ____________________ |
| Separate equipment and finish release | ____________________ |
Worked example
Illustrative example: a fictional owner requests painting behind a connected refrigerator. The scope names a separate movement and reconnection arrangement before work. The household can plan the interruption without the painter’s room quote being interpreted as authorization to disconnect equipment.
