How much does interior painting cost in Vermont?
A useful price starts with a written scope, not a price per floor square foot. Measure the room, list which surfaces need work, and identify prep before comparing bids. The free room calculator gives a planning range without asking for contact details.
First, measure the surface being painted
For a simple rectangular room, wall area starts with 2 × (length + width) × ceiling height. Then allow for doors and windows. The calculator uses an approximate opening allowance and lets you add ceilings and trim separately. Your painter should replace that planning measurement with actual site measurements before a final bid.
Example: a 12 × 14 foot room with an 8-foot ceiling starts at 416 square feet of wall surface before openings. Our planning model allows 70 square feet for openings, or about 346 square feet of wall area. A room with broad windows, built-ins, multiple doors or unusual walls will differ.
A modelled one-room range—not a contractor quote
On September 15, 2026, the V.I.P. calculator returned a $1,150–$1,400 planning range for one Vermont 12 × 14 × 8 room, walls only, normal prep, two finish coats, clear access and flexible timing. This is a model output, not a verified market bid or a promise to perform the work at that price. Recalculate with your actual selections, then request a condition review.
| Change to the scope | Why the range can move |
|---|---|
| Ceilings | More paintable area, masking and overhead labor |
| Trim and doors | More detail work, sanding, cutting and coating |
| Heavy repairs or peeling | Prep, patching, primer and possible safety screening |
| Occupied or furnished rooms | Protection, furniture coordination and access |
| Three coats or a dramatic color change | Additional material and labor |
| Short deadline | Crew scheduling and capacity constraints |
Specify what each quote includes
Write down whether the work includes floor and furniture protection, cleaning, patching, sanding, caulking, spot or full priming, paint brand and line, number of coats, walls, ceilings, trim, doors, cleanup and final touch-ups. If a bid says only “paint room,” the missing decisions can become change orders.
For a light refresh, small nail holes and sound existing paint may need modest prep. Water stains, failing coatings, older plaster, large repairs or glossy trim require a different plan. Photos help, but a final quote should still check adhesion, surface condition and access.
Vermont pre-1978 homes need a lead-safe check
Vermont Department of Health RRPM guidance says painted surfaces in pre-1978 housing and child-occupied facilities are presumed to contain lead unless the state’s exemption process establishes otherwise. Disturbing those surfaces may trigger licensing and work-practice requirements. Tell us the build year and where paint will be disturbed; we will not treat an online estimate as a lead-safe work plan.
What powers the planning number?
The estimator combines approximate surface area, coats, condition, occupancy and state-level cost factors. Its state-level planning card was reviewed September 14, 2026 and draws from BLS May 2025 occupational wage tables and BEA regional price parities. Those are broad inputs, not live ZIP-level contractor rates. This is why a photo and site-condition review are the next step before a binding quote.
Next step: price your actual room
Try the no-contact calculator and choose walls, ceiling, trim, condition and coats. If the project is in Vermont, send the result, photos and deadline for a reviewed quote. We can select direct execution or route the job to a qualified painter when that best fits the scope, with your routing consent.
